Vehicle rental company registrations in the Canary Islands plummet

The registrations of these companies also fall nationally, but the autonomous community of the Canary Islands registers the largest drop

The car rental companies in the Canary Islands have registered a huge drop in registrations in May, the highest in the country, at 15.56%, compared to 10.4% nationally, according to data from the consultancy MSI for FENEVAL, compared to the same period last year.

Regarding the corporate channel, during this period it has registered a slight increase nationally of 0.32%, to 45,223 registrations. In the case of the private individual channel, it grew by 4.84%, with 51,398 registrations.

In the year-to-date, the car rental company channel closes with a total of 147,404 registrations, representing an increase of 5.75% compared to 2025. As for the corporate and private individual channels, their data are also positive and even practically similar, with increases of 6.20% and 6.21%, respectively.

Throughout the month of May and within the car rental channel, Gasoline/Electric cars registered the largest increase in registrations, with 87.08%. Following them are Diesel Mild Hybrid, with an increase of 11.54%.

For their part, the largest drops in this period correspond to electric vehicles, with a decrease of 55.24%; to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicles, with a decrease of 35.76%; and to gasoline vehicles, which fell by 26.19%.

On the other hand, gasoline engine vehicles (31.74%) continue to hold the largest market share for another month, followed again by Gasoline Mild Hybrid (20.83%). As for fully electric engine vehicles, their total market share stands at 1.71% on this occasion.

Asturias is positioned as the autonomous community with the highest monthly growth when compared to the same month of the previous year (+60.73%). The data from Cantabria (+44.15%) and Murcia (+39.72%) also stand out.

On the other hand, Canary Islands (-15.56%), Galicia (-6.48%), and Catalonia (-4.71%) registered the main decreases in May 2026.
