The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Mariano H. Zapata, last week announced a subsidy worth 18.4 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2021-2027.

The terms and conditions can be consulted in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), and the deadline for submission will be June 22. In the words of the Minister, this European aid aims to "advance the green transition of the islands." He highlighted that "with this subsidy, public administrations, companies, or citizens themselves will be able to be part of this path towards decarbonization and that will position us as a competitive region, which generates opportunities and quality jobs."

The applications registered to date exceed seven million euros, a figure that highlights the high interest of citizens, companies, and the productive sector of the archipelago in moving towards a more sustainable and efficient energy model.

In addition, Zapata explained that the subsidy amount has been increased compared to last year by more than 9 million euros, which "demonstrates the commitment of this Ministry to ensure that society participates in this new model and collaborates in the adaptation and mitigation of climate change."

Among the main actions, "improving energy efficiency in buildings, with actions on the thermal envelope (insulation and windows), in thermal and lighting installations; energy efficiency in the industrial sector, with examples of actions such as improving technology in equipment, installations, and processes in productive sectors; or the implementation of integrated projects, which in a single application combine energy efficiency actions and renewable actions, or energy efficiency and storage actions; as well as actions for the implementation of renewable energies for the production of electricity and thermal uses, such as self-consumption photovoltaic installations."

In the same vein, Zapata recalled the important role of the Canary Islands Energy Offices, which "are informing and attending to all inquiries from citizens, companies, and administrations, and accompanying and facilitating procedures related to the energy transition."

Specifically, the beneficiaries of these grants may be the business sector (with a total amount of 6,220,923.00 euros), individuals (with a total amount of 5,075,461.00 euros), third sector entities (with a total amount of 500,000 euros), energy communities (with a total amount of 1,000,000.00 €), city councils (with a total amount of 2,985,461.00 euros) and island councils (with a total amount of 2,679,539.00 euros).

Said aid will cover a percentage of the eligible costs, with different intensities depending on the type of beneficiary: up to 60% for homeowners' associations, 50% for individuals and third sector entities, between 30% and 45% for companies, and 100% for public administrations.
