Developing new strategies to improve the control of enzootic pneumonia in pigs, a respiratory disease that affects livestock production, is the objective of a ULPGC research project focused on the controlled use of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, selected in the call for applied R&D projects promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture (CUCIC), through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI).
The initiative proposes to advance knowledge of the interaction between the pathogen and the host through an innovative approach based on the controlled colonization of animals with apathogenic strains of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The objective is to study how this colonization can influence the host's response and contribute to developing more effective strategies for disease control.
Enzootic pneumonia in pigs is an animal health problem that can affect animal welfare and the efficiency of production systems. Therefore, improving knowledge about the interaction mechanisms between the microorganism and the host can open new avenues for advancing towards more sustainable prevention and control methods.
The project will generate a positive impact in the Canary Islands by contributing to the improvement of animal health and the sustainability of livestock systems, favoring the generation of knowledge applicable to disease prevention and the improvement of production systems.
Due to its orientation, the initiative aligns with the priorities of the Canary Islands Smart and Sustainable Specialization Strategy (RIS3 extended), especially within the scope of Health and Welfare, by addressing a challenge related to animal health and the sustainability of livestock activity.
The proposal obtained a score of 72.3 points in the scientific and technical evaluation of the call and is classified as an experimental development project, with a budget of 104,175.20 euros.
The initiative is part of the 17 projects financed in the latest regional call for applied R&D, endowed with more than 2.5 million euros, and has co-financing from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the ERDF Canary Islands Program 2021-2027.
