The month of August ended with 289 fewer unemployed in Lanzarote, which represents a decrease of 1.91 percent compared to the previous month, and more than 10 percent compared to August 2013. The total number of unemployed now stands at 14,842, being the best figure since September 2011.
Since the beginning of the crisis, especially since the beginning of 2009, unemployment figures have skyrocketed on the island. That year began with 13,670 unemployed and two months later, the figure had risen to 16,640. From there, the situation continued to worsen exponentially, even exceeding 18,000 unemployed on the island in May 2012, although with ups and downs depending on the months.
During this time, the best figure had been recorded in September 2011, when Lanzarote was again below 15,000 unemployed, specifically with 14,817. However, then the figure rose again, until from 2013 it began to fall, although slowly, almost every month.
Now, thanks to the push of the month of August, with the island full of tourists, it has been possible to fall below that barrier of 15,000 unemployed again, although it is still very far from the data prior to the start of the crisis.
