Aena plans to start the remodeling works of the Lanzarote airport in 2027 with a budget of 140 million euros and with the aim of expanding and remodeling terminal 1 in both check-in and boarding areas, as well as security controls.
Two companies that presented jointly are currently preparing the details of the remodeling of the César Manrique. These are One Works S.P.A and Viarium Ingenieria S.L. who were awarded the contract for about 4.9 million euros.
The works will join the two terminals of the airport and aesthetically must be integrated into the environment and with the island, taking inspiration from the work of César Manrique.
Thus, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, which also plans beautification works in the surroundings of the airport, wants to be part of the reform process. Its president, Oswaldo Betancort, has requested a working meeting with the top managers of AENA to address this issue and other strategic issues.
This request responds to the Cabildo's commitment to "continue advancing in a model of airport infrastructure that respects the natural environment of the island, improves the experience of travelers and guarantees operational safety".
"We want the remodeling of the terminal area of the airport to be inspired by the Lanzarote landscape and the spirit of the work of César Manrique, with an architectural proposal that dialogues with the environment," said Oswaldo Betancort, who stresses the importance of Aena and the Cabildo working "hand in hand" in this project, according to the environmental and aesthetic values of the island.
Likewise, Betancort recalls that the Cabildo is also promoting a project of beautification and landscape improvement of the airport environment and the LZ-2 highway. "Lanzarote has to project, from the first moment you arrive on the island, from the airport itself, a beautiful and careful image that reflects its uniqueness and aesthetic appeal, so the cleaning and beautification of the garden areas is also very important," emphasizes the president.
Another of the issues that Oswaldo Betancort wants to address and resume in this meeting is the problem derived from the lack of police officers at the airport. "It is unacceptable that residents and visitors have to endure long waits due to the lack of personnel in security controls. More human and material resources are needed to ensure efficient operation," said Betancort.
The president recalls that the César Manrique Airport is the tenth in the country by volume of passengers and the third in the Canary Islands, with about 800,000 travelers only in the past month of March. "We cannot allow the first impression of those who visit us to be an uncomfortable and chaotic experience. We need actions that improve the services of our airport, a key infrastructure in the connectivity, image and development of our island."
Another issue to be addressed in this meeting will be the expansion project of the César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, whose drafting has already been awarded, to improve operational efficiency and service quality. This expansion also aims to ensure a management adapted to the needs of the territory, ensuring environmental sustainability and the reduction of emissions.
