The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA), has published the Resolution calling for the Official Contest of Sea Salt Agrocanarias 2026, aimed at promoting recognition and distinguishing the best productions of the Archipelago.

This year's edition will be held in Lanzarote and will consist of two days. The first, on September 16, will be for the homogenization of technical criteria, while the contest will take place on the 17th.

A tasting panel will evaluate samples of sea salts from the evaporation of seawater in two categories: 'Virgin Sea Salt' and 'Flower of Salt'. Through a blind tasting system, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products will determine which will be distinguished with grand gold medals, gold and silver medals.

A special distinction will also be awarded to the production that has obtained the highest score according to the tasting sheet, which will be recognized as the Best Sea Salt of the Canary Islands 2026; as well as the distinction “Best Organic Sea Salt of the Canary Islands 2026”, which the jury may award to productions registered in the organic production operators file, and which has obtained the highest score in all categories.

In addition, in order to encourage innovation in this sector, and as in the previous edition, other products made fundamentally with sea salt may be submitted and may only opt for the distinction “Best innovation, image and presentation”. Fine salt and liquid salt are excluded.

The director of the ICCA, Luis Arráez Guadalupe, highlighted the importance of this biennial event, “thus responding to the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to enhance the value of an emblematic product of our islands”. In this regard, Arráez pointed out that with this contest, the ICCA not only seeks to make visible the excellence and diversity of our artisanal salt pans, but also to support the preservation of a centuries-old landscape and tradition closely linked to the Canarian identity and our environmental heritage”.

The registration is open to natural or legal persons who produce, package, and market sea salt in the Archipelago, who are present in commercial channels, and who respond to their own commercial brands. Each entity may only submit one reference and commercial brand per group, and white-label brands owned by distribution are excluded.

The labels or packaging of the awarded productions will be exhibited at the ICCA facilities until the celebration of the next edition of the competition, and the product that obtains the distinction of ‘Best Agrocanarias Sea Salt 2026’ will be the subject of a report that will be published on the Institute's website and disseminated to generalist and specialized media. In addition, the awarded companies will receive their public recognition at an official event to be held at the end of the year.

Participation applications can be submitted until August 28 through the electronic headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands: or on the website of the ICCA.
