This August, 3,541 passenger cars and SUVs were registered in the Canary Islands, 14% more than in August 2021. However, the data is still far from the sales figures that were recorded during the last summer before the pandemic, specifically 23% less than in August 2019 when 4,584 units were registered. The employers' association highlights that a better performance of the sector in terms of sales is appreciated in the province of Las Palmas.
“Historically, August has been a complicated month in terms of sales, coinciding with the holiday period. We have held our own, thanks to the delivery of cars that have been sold in past months and are now being delivered to our customers. However, there are still component problems and in the coming months we are going to notice an even more suffocating lack of stock for the sector, which makes it difficult to make forecasts," explained the president of the Canary Islands dealership association, Manuel Sánchez.
Sales by type of buyer
If we analyze the registrations by type of buyer, the sale to individuals continues to recover as vehicles that have been sold in previous months are delivered during these days. Sales to the final customer grew by 16% compared to last year with 1,753 units registered.
Sales to companies grew significantly by 109%, compared to August of last year, with 1,008 passenger cars and SUVs registered.
For the employers' association, the tourist pull of the summer season explains the rebound experienced by both sales to individuals and companies.
However, registrations in the rental companies channel fell again for the second consecutive month, 30% less than in August 2021.
Regarding the rest of the markets, in the commercial vehicle segment, registrations grew by just 7.63% compared to August 2021. In total, 621 vehicles were registered in the Canary Islands during the past month of August.
The motorcycle market continues to grow, with 879 two-wheeled vehicles registered during the past month of August, 35.44% more than the previous year.
For its part, the sale of buses and industrial vehicles increased by 181% with 45 vehicles registered. A notable growth due to the delivery of trucks sold previously and that were not in stock.
So far this year, in the total market for passenger cars and SUVs, registrations have grown by 32% compared to 2021.
