The regional government intends to "bring down to earth" the climate change law of the Canary Islands

The minister of the branch argues that the text contains “excessive” demands and "oversized" structures

Councilor Hernández Zapata with the leader of his party, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo.

The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Hernández Zapata, has said that he wants to modify the climate change law of the previous Government to "bring it down to earth".

He made it known this Wednesday in a parliamentary commission. Hernández Zapata considers that the law has “excessive” bureaucratic demands and recommendations, and also thinks that the structures it proposes are “oversized.”

He has also stated that, according to a report by the bilateral commission, some articles of the Climate Change Law may be unconstitutional.

The technical staff of the ministry is also working on the carbon footprint registry and on creating the climate agency.

Energy planning hand in hand with the Cabildos

The minister has raised the need to be consistent with the reality of the Canary Islands in the fight against climate change, which is “non-negotiable” and for which the energy transition is the “key”, and has acknowledged that the penetration of renewable energies has been “poor”.

Mariano Hernández Zapata has referred to the need to take decisive steps in energy planning, hand in hand with the island councils, which have been the “great forgotten” in planning, and a clear commitment to alternative energies.

Regarding the fires, he said that a forest plan has been designed, which will be reported on shortly, to provide budget for actions to recover biodiversity, and has also advocated promoting job creation measures to recover the soil and also improve the units of the intervention teams.

The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has asserted that the forest law will be strategic, and a working table with technicians will be convened to prepare the preliminary draft.

Hernández Zapata has also indicated that it is urgent to declare a climate emergency, something that the Government Council of the Canary Islands will do in the coming dates.
