The traffic radar that fines the most in the entire Canary archipelago is at kilometer 20 of the LZ 67, also known as the Montañas del Fuego road, according to the European Automobile Drivers' Defense Organization (AEA).
The AEA explains that through the radar at kilometer 20 of the Lanzarote road that connects Yaiza and Tinajo, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) filed 25,375 complaints in 2024, the highest number among the radars in the archipelago.
According to the data provided by the AEA, complaints at this radar have grown exponentially since 2023 when 2,999 complaints were recorded, nine times less than last year.
The second most "fining" radar in the archipelago has behaved in the opposite way. It is located at kilometer 42 of the Southern Highway of Gran Canaria and has gone from having 38,266 complaints in 2023 to 11,403 last year.
The number of complaints has also decreased in the third radar with the most fines in the Canary Islands. It is located at kilometer zero of the Vía de Ronda or TF-13, one of the most important roads in the Metropolitan Area of Santa Cruz - La Laguna. There, 9,491 complaints were filed last year, almost 5,000 less than the previous year.
In Spain as a whole, the DGT radars filed 3,440,655 complaints for speeding, which represents an increase of 4% over those made in the same period of the previous year (3,305,978).
"In view of the significant number of complaints filed mostly on highways and freeways, and not on secondary roads where 70% of accidents with victims occur," the president of AEA, Mario Arnaldo,
believes that "the DGT should rethink its radar policy, since it is not achieving the objective of avoiding speeding or accidents, turning radars into mere collection instruments."
By number of complaints, the AEA report indicates that Andalusia continues to lead the ranking of the autonomous communities with the most active radars, with 959,592 complaints, which represents 27.8% of the total filed in all of Spain.
Next, Castilla y León, with 413,343 complaints (12%); the Valencian Community, with 366,360 (10.6%) and Castilla La Mancha, with 310,795 (9%).
Regarding the radar that filed the most complaints, the one located at kilometer 20 of the M-40 (Madrid) continues to hold the record for complaints (74,873), although it has reduced its activity by 36% compared to the previous year.
