The Port of Arrecife Records the Largest Increase in Merchandise Traffic in the Province

The port of Lanzarote's capital registered more than 1.6 million tons of merchandise between January and September, 22.09% more than in the same period of 2024.

The Las Palmas Port Authority has published the statistics for September 2025, which consolidate the growth trend of the provincial port system in its main traffic. Between January and September, the five ports that make up the Port Authority, Las Palmas, Arrecife, Puerto del Rosario, Arinaga, and Salinetas, reached a total traffic of 27,781,929 tons, which represents an increase of 17.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, that is, 4,217,295 tons more.

The increase in total cargo, with a rise of 19.57% to reach 25,578,968 tons, together with the strength of container movement, which grew by 16.18% with 1,158,731 TEU, and the boost in cruise traffic, which rose by 18.33% with 1,236,092 passengers, maintain the positive evolution of the Port Authority of Las Palmas and consolidate its role as a leading logistics and tourism hub in the Mid-Atlantic. For its part, bunkering maintains a path of moderate growth, with an advance of 0.65% and a total of 1,994,625 tons supplied.

 

"Robust" growth in goods, containers, and cruises

The president of the Las Palmas Port Authority, Beatriz Calzada, positively assessed these results, noting that "the September data confirm robust growth in goods, containers, and cruises. The strength of transit and the diversification of traffic allow us to gain competitiveness, attract new stopovers, and consolidate our ports as a logistics and tourism hub." She added that "in bunkering, we are following a path of sustained and orderly progress, consistent with the safe, efficient, and competitive provision of services."

In the passenger sector, the Port Authority's ports have accumulated 2,455,650 travelers up to September, an increase of 5.41% compared to the previous year. This growth is mainly supported by cruise tourism, with an increase of 18.33% and 1,236,092 passengers.

Total traffic registers an increase of almost 18%, driven by both foreign trade, with more than 15,603,074 tons and a growth of 27.84%, and national cabotage, with 9,975,894 tons and an increase of 8.60%. General cargo reaches 17,115,244 tons and a growth of 16.21%, with increases in both conventional cargo, with 4,533,899 tons and a rise of 23.79%, and containerized cargo, with more than 12,581,347 tons and an increase of 13.71%. Bulk cargo also reflects solid performance, with 8,463,723 tons, which represents an increase of 27%, highlighting the dynamism of liquid bulk and its rise of 27.35%.

Regarding container movement, the Port Authority's ports total 1,158,731 TEUs, an increase of 16.18%, with a notable boost in transit, reaching 711,469 TEUs and a rise of 26.60%. Ro-Ro traffic, vehicles and rolling cargo that are loaded and unloaded under their own power, also reinforces the upward trend with an increase of 5.02% in units, which amounts to 285,410, and a significant growth of 14.70% in tons, with 4,320,948.

 

Evolution of port traffic by ports: January–September 2025 compared to 2024

The Port of Las Palmas maintains its position as the main engine with 24,199,218 tons, which represents an increase of 18.28%. It is followed by the Port of Arrecife, with 1,664,422 tons and an increase of 22.09%, and the Port of Puerto del Rosario, which registers 1,269,628 tons and a rise of 19.69%. The Port of Arinaga grows by 12.42% to 199,347 tons, while Salinetas closes the period with 449,314 tons and a decrease of 10.95%.

In the case of the Port of Las Palmas, the year-on-year comparison between January and September 2025 and the same period of 2024 reflects positive performance in practically all indicators. Passenger traffic grew by 1.49%, driven by the strong performance of cruise tourism, with an increase of 15.54%.

Total traffic movement reaches 22,028,635 tons, representing an increase of 20.28%, and container traffic maintains its strength with 1,072,946 TEU, 17.11% more than in the previous year. As for containerized cargo, the figure rises to 11,905,502 tons, which represents an increase of 14.25%, consolidating the port as an essential node of international maritime traffic.

Bunkering maintains an upward trend, with an increase of 0.68% and a total of 1,987,878 tons supplied. For its part, Ro-Ro traffic is also evolving favorably, with an increase of 3.09% in units, making a total of 188,675, and 12.16% in tons, which translates to 2,927,383, confirming the diversification and stability of the different types of traffic that operate in the capital's port.

September Results: Year-over-Year Comparison Between 2024 and 2025

The month of September shows especially significant progress, with an increase of 31% in the movement of goods, representing 3,069,211 tons, and 36.68% in containers, which translates to 137,815 TEU, driven by the growth of goods in transit, with an increase of 43.47%, and greater activity in loading and unloading operations.

With these results, the Port Authority of Las Palmas reaffirms its strategic position in the Mid-Atlantic and maintains a path of sustained growth in 2025, supported by the diversification of traffic, the strength of international transit, and the dynamism of cruise tourism, while bunkering consolidates a gradual and solid advance, aligned with the evolution of global maritime activity.
