Rodaje Teaser Malvasía 2

Lanzarote hosts these days the filming of the promotional teaser for ‘Malvasía,’ one of the series projects awarded in the 2025 edition of the script laboratory isLABentura Canarias, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development (ICDC) and Canary Islands Film.

The fiction, created by Laura Pérez Gómez and inspired by the world of wine, is currently in an advanced stage of development and seeks to complete its sales dossier.

The start of this filming is directly related to the award that Pérez obtained last autumn in the final of isLABentura Canarias, granted by the Audiovisual Laboratory for the development of the post-production of this filming.

For its part, the filming team will also take advantage of the foray into the island to record the first official images in landscapes such as Timanfaya or La Geria, create the series' sound identity as a narrative element, and compile a meticulous catalog of locations, which will serve to identify future filming spaces.

‘Malvasía,’ which is structured as a five-episode series with strong influences of mystery and magical realism, is also open to production companies, platforms, and other sources of financing.

‘Malvasía,’ a tale of science, magical realism, and grief under the ash

Laura Pérez Gómez's series is shaping up to be a mystery drama aimed at an adult audience that follows the steps of Vic, a renowned biochemist marked by the recent loss of her daughter. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she travels to Lanzarote to give a lecture on viticulture and meets Elisa, who invites her to her winery to show her the discovery of a mysterious volcanic strain, completely immune to pests. What she doesn't know is that, by ingesting the grapes from this strange strain, she will be able to see her dead daughter.

Through this narrative axis, the story of ‘Malvasía’ addresses grief and the weight of family legacy in a series that draws directly from resources such as magical realism, where the land and ash manage to connect the characters with the memory of their ancestors.

Its creator, Laura Pérez Gómez, has a renowned career within the audiovisual panorama, with experience in both scriptwriting, production, and direction. She has worked under Almodóvar in ‘Dolor y Gloria’ and David Trueba in the documentary ‘Salir de Casa’, and is currently developing the feature films ‘Un dibujante en La Habana’ and ‘Especies distintas’, also awarded at isLABentura Canarias 2022. Furthermore, in June she will premiere her next fiction short film, ‘A certa distància’, starring the young poet and performer Elsa Moreno and the renowned actress Sonia Almarcha, at the Cinema Jove Festival in Valencia.

During its participation in the 2025 edition of the Canary Islands Film script lab, ‘Malvasía’ already received a significant boost with the project's involvement in the prestigious pitch One to One event, framed within the program of Promercat, in Valencia.

Lanzarote, leading setting and strategic ally

The production of ‘Malvasía’ has carefully selected the enclaves that best represent the visual identity of the series. The main focus of the filming is located in the characteristic landscape of La Geria, which will serve as the setting for Bodegas Fénix, the fictional family business where the plot unfolds. Likewise, the filming itinerary will extend along the coast of Famara, the surroundings of Playa Blanca, the historic streets of Teguise, and the geological landscape of Timanfaya National Park

An entire operational deployment that has also been possible thanks to the close collaboration of various entities, such as Lanzarote Film Comission -dependent on the island's Cabildo-, which has facilitated the arrangements together with Onyxay Lanzarote Producciones and Hotel Los Jameos Seaside. For its part, Bodegas La Geria has provided its real facilities and its characteristic vineyards to host the filming team during one of the shooting days.

IsLABentura Canarias: weaving stories

The journey of ‘Malvasía’ reaffirms the success of IsLABentura Canarias as a consolidated platform to channel narrative talent towards the audiovisual industry. While this project makes the leap to its sales stage, the script lab promoted by Canary Islands Film and the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural (ICDC) is immersed in its 2026 edition, which began last April.

With the objective of continuing to generate stories based on the islands, a total of 16 screenwriters are in the full writing process under the mentorship of professional tutors. Next July, all participants of this edition will meet again on the island of La Gomera to begin the training phase, in which they will receive workshops on character development, scene creation, production, script sales, and more.
