The Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL) demands the urgent renewal of the island's electrical system after the energy blackout recorded this Saturday. The employers' association urges public administrations and electricity companies to define investments and execution deadlines to guarantee a modern service on which homes, businesses, and essential services depend.

The president of the CEL, Beatriz Salazar, agrees with the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, in pointing out that the age of the equipment and the slowness of state procedures compromise the security of supply. “The state tender for 2024 for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura projected that the works would not be completed before 2028. We cannot wait years to have a reliable network; it is essential to speed up contracting and streamline procedures,” Salazar emphasizes.

Salazar stresses that the consequences of the blackout go beyond the temporary interruption of service. “An incident of this magnitude projects a bad image to those who visit us and undermines confidence in the island. Energy stability is key to protecting the daily work of our companies and preserving the tourist experience,” she warns.

The CEL requests a precise clarification of the causes of the failure to avoid similar future episodes, to determine the necessary technical improvements, and to assign responsibilities and explicit execution deadlines.

Finally, the organization urges the coordination of institutional and business actions not only in the general grid but also by promoting renewable energies, self-consumption, and energy efficiency as pillars to guarantee the continuity and sustainability of the supply.
