The ambitious strategic plan designed by the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa together with the insular Cabildo to transform Puerto Naos into a university, training, and business enclave linked to the sea, has taken a decisive step today.

Within the framework of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority, in which the president of the Chamber, José Valle, participates, representing the first insular corporation, fundamental advances have been confirmed that validate the roadmap presented by both institutions last year.

One of the most significant points has been the signing for the publication of the public exhibition of the application for the concession of the old FRIGORSA building. This procedure is essential for the Cabildo of Lanzarote to be able to launch the Center for Marine and Fishing Environment Research.

This infrastructure will not only provide Arrecife and the island with a new research and museum offering, but it is one of the six transformative interventions of the joint strategy that seeks to regenerate Naos. It is about converting a space historically linked to the fishing industry into a driver of innovation and knowledge within the blue economy concept.

Likewise, the tender for the demolition of 165 meters of the protective breakwater on the Naos dock has been announced. With the existence of the southern breakwater, this structure is no longer necessary to curb the waves, becoming an unnecessary visual barrier.

Its elimination will allow the Marina of Arrecife to recover its direct connection with the marine horizon, improving the aesthetics of the city and enhancing its tourist and commercial appeal.

An investment of 12 million euros

These actions are part of the proposal led by the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, and the president of the Chamber, José Valle, which projects a global investment of approximately 12 million euros in the area.

“We are facing a historic opportunity to link academic training with the business reality of our island,” said José Valle. “Communication with the Port Authority is constant to ensure that projects such as the university area, the urban maritime park, or the completion of the Naos breakwater proceed at the planned pace. Transforming Naos is, ultimately, transforming Arrecife and strengthening the economic fabric of all of Lanzarote.”

In this regard, Valle has wanted to highlight the joint work and collaboration maintained with the Minister of Fishing of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, whose area is fundamental to promote the equipment of FRIGORSA and coordinate development actions in the marine environment. "Transforming Naos is, ultimately, transforming Arrecife and strengthening the economic fabric of all of Lanzarote," concluded the chamber president.

From the Chamber of Commerce, it is emphasized that institutional cooperation and public-private collaboration are the axes that are allowing these historical demands to become administrative and technical realities today, guaranteeing sustainable and prosperous development for the island.
