The Government Council of the Canary Islands has agreed this Monday to request the State to urgently convene the bilateral commission to proceed to renegotiate the transfer of coasts, since the regional executive considers that the Government of Spain continues to oversee its statutory powers.

The powers over coasts were transferred to the Autonomous Community on January 1, 2023, but the Government of the Canary Islands, of CC and PP, accuses its predecessor, led by the PSOE, of having accepted a transfer that implies state tutelage of the effective management of functions.

The powers were transferred partially and do not provide a solution to many of the issues, according to the spokesman for the Government of the Canary Islands, Alfonso Cabello, after the meeting of the Government Council.

He added that the Minister of Public Works, Pablo Rodríguez, who is responsible for coasts, has met several times with representatives of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and has verified their "reluctance" to allow the Canary Islands to exercise its powers.

The situation is "unsustainable", hence the Government of the Canary Islands has agreed to request the urgent convening of the bilateral commission with the State to renegotiate these transfers, Cabello said.
