The Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute (IAC) will broadcast live and openly from Palencia a special program to mark the total solar eclipse through its official channel on Youtube.
The production and technical deployment will be located at the Cerro del Otero in Palencia, from where a scientific outreach, technical analysis, and institutional interventions space will be conducted with the aim of bringing cutting-edge astrophysics closer to all citizens, according to an IAC note.
The broadcast will be hosted by science journalist and head of the IAC's Communication and Scientific Culture Unit, Verónica Martín, with the support of IAC outreach astrophysicist Irene Puerto.
The broadcast will feature interviews with the protagonists of the day, such as the mayor of Palencia, Miriam Andrés Prieto; the director of the IAC, Valentín Martínez Pillet; and the Minister of Science, Universities, and Innovation of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín, among others.
This broadcast will include a live connection with the telescopes that will be capturing the eclipse and the solar corona.
The choice of Palencia for the broadcast coincides with the program of events that the IAC has organized together with the Palencia City Council and the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, which includes the trial of the NATE project.
The NATE project, launched by the IAC, along with other institutions such as Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and the NSO, will establish in Morocco in 2027 a coordinated network of stations with telescopes operated by teams formed by students and faculty from secondary and university levels from the three countries involved, in addition to astronomers and engineers from the IAC, UM6P, and the NSO.
Previously, during this year's eclipse in Palencia, a crucial trial and training of the different teams will be carried out.
The scientific work will be carried out in full view of the public, and the team of experts will also be deployed for three days throughout Palencia and its surroundings to bring the passion for science, astronomy, and solar physics closer and to rediscover the sky "as a source of wonder," the note indicates.
The team will organize talks, workshops, and safe solar observation points, and will serve as a bridge between scientific work and citizen participation. In this way, according to the IAC, while the protocol and data channeling of the NATE network are being tested with the scientific team and students, the public will experience a fun and festive day, with accessible activities.
