The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has updated the reference fares that limit the prices of flights under the Public Service Obligation (PSO) regime that occur between the islands of the Canary archipelago with an increase of 7% on average.
This increase will provide the operating companies with "greater flexibility" to expand their offer of prices on these, resulting in the possibility of marketing cheaper fares based on higher ones, which will always be subject to the limitations established by the PSO, as the Ministry reported this Monday in a statement.
The possible impact of this update on users of these routes is mitigated by the bonus provided by the Ministry for air transport for residents of the Canary Islands, which covers 75% of the fare, indicates the note, which specifies that the ministerial order will come into effect immediately upon its publication in the BOE.
With it, the public service obligations (PSO) are modified for the 13 routes between islands that were included under this regime by agreement of the Council of Ministers of June 2, 2006, with the aim of guaranteeing citizen mobility.
The update of the tariff regime seeks to adapt the airlines' offer to current market conditions, which are very susceptible to price fluctuations, while maintaining necessary routes for the island society, according to the note.
The Canary Islands PSO routes for which the reference fare will be modified are: Gran Canaria-Tenerife North, Gran Canaria-Tenerife South, Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria-El Hierro, Gran Canaria-Lanzarote, Tenerife North-Fuerteventura, Tenerife North-El Hierro, Tenerife North-Lanzarote, Tenerife North-La Palma and La Palma–Lanzarote.
However, three public service routes will maintain current reference fares and they will be Gran Canaria-La Palma, Gran Canaria-La Gomera, and Tenerife North-La Gomera, the note reports.
The evolution of air transport, "very sensitive" to cost increases, has made it necessary to adjust the tariff parameters on routes operated under public service obligations, the Ministry points out.
With this order, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility once again shows its commitment to continue guaranteeing adequate air connectivity in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, the statement highlights.
