The Board of Directors of the state-owned commercial company Aguas de las Cuencas de España (ACUAES), of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, has authorized in its meeting today the signing of a new addendum between ACUAES and the Lanzarote Water Consortium for the execution and financing of new sanitation and purification actions on the island of Lanzarote.
The addendum will allow the completion of the actions that ACUAES is carrying out in the Arrecife and Tías systems, within the framework of the agreement signed with the Lanzarote Water Consortium on July 21, 2021 and the addendum signed on October 21, 2024.
In Arrecife, ACUAES is carrying out the works to expand the treatment plant, which will serve a population of 126,000 equivalent inhabitants, with its completion scheduled for January 2027.
1,300 meters have been installed out of the 2,640 contemplated in the outfall expansion project, although the detection of problems in the route during execution has forced the partial withdrawal from the contract. To complete the installation of the remaining 1,340 meters, it has been necessary to draft a new project, which was put out to tender on July 8.
On the other hand, the works to expand and improve the current WWTP of Tías, along with the pumping stations and the wastewater pumping station (EBAR) of Puerto Calero, will begin next August with the signing of the site survey verification act, once they were awarded by the Board of Directors of ACUAES meeting on May 28.
The addendum authorized today increases the planned investment to 52.5 million euros (IGIC excluded), compared to the 37.5 million that the 2024 addendum included.
This increase in investment will allow the execution of a new terrestrial outfall in Tías, the rehabilitation of a section of submarine outfall diffusers to improve the current dilution conditions of the discharge, as well as the construction of new pipelines between Yaiza, Uga and the new WWTP; the EBARs of Yaiza, Uga and Barranco del Agua; and a reclaimed water tank that will allow part of this resource to be used for irrigation, as well as for municipal cleaning services and the irrigation of parks and gardens.
50% of the investment will be financed by FEDER 2021-2027 funds. The remaining 50% will be advanced by ACUAES from its own funds (40%) and through a loan operation (10%). Both amounts will be recovered from the Consortium, through fees, from the start of the operation of the new facilities.
