The Cabildo of Lanzarote has sealed its adhesion to the Network of Local Governments +Biodiversity, an initiative promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) that aims to promote local policies oriented towards the conservation of biodiversity, the protection of ecosystems, and sustainable development.
The incorporation of the Corporation chaired by Oswaldo Betancort into this network was approved by the Governing Council and subsequently ratified in a plenary session last Friday, December 19, thus sealing a strategic action that reinforces the Cabildo's commitment to environmental sustainability, improves its technical management capacity, and enhances institutional cooperation in environmental matters.
The Minister of Landscape and Food Sovereignty, Samuel Martín, defended the proposal, highlighting the added value of being part of this state collaboration framework. "The objective of this network," he said, "is to become a technical support for local corporations, offering tools to achieve sustainable development. And this strategic action – which we are undertaking with the support of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities – will improve our technical environmental management capacity, as it facilitates the Cabildo's entry into working groups and promotes citizen participation policies, among other initiatives," he stressed.
The +Biodiversity Network of Local Governments constitutes a stable space for cooperation between local administrations that promotes the adoption of plans, programs, and projects linked to biodiversity conservation, the restoration of degraded natural spaces, the improvement of ecological connectivity, the protection of water resources, and citizen awareness.
Through this adhesion, the Cabildo de Lanzarote will be able to actively participate in various specialized working groups, access technical and training advice, share best practices with other local entities, and strengthen the design of public policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially those linked to sustainable cities, the protection of terrestrial ecosystems, and institutional alliances.
Likewise, integration into the Network will allow for the involvement of different areas of the island Corporation, such as the Biosphere Reserve, the Geopark, Environment, Environmental Education, Climate Change, Heritage, Planning, and Food Sovereignty, fostering a **cross-cutting vision of environmental management.**
