From January to October, electricity demand in Lanzarote increased by 18.7% compared to the same period last year, showing signs of the recovery of economic activity after the pandemic, according to Endesa data.
Lanzarote was the Canary Island where the growth in electricity demand was highest. Next are Fuerteventura, with a very close growth of 18.6%, followed by Tenerife 6.4%, Gran Canaria 3.4% and La Gomera 2.0%. The rest of the islands, however, recorded negative data La Palma (-4.5%) and El Hierro (-1.0%).
In the overall calculation for the Canary Islands, the increase was 6.7% and the total electricity demand this year stood at 7,110.6 gigawatt hours. The data by provinces have registered an increase of 7.7% in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and 5.4% in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
On the other hand, the gross production of Endesa's thermal power plants, which offer a supply guarantee, reached 5,897.1 GWh in the first ten months of the year, with an increase of 6.0% compared to the previous year. The nine thermal power plants covered 78% of the total electricity demanded in the Canary Islands.
All economic sectors are in positive values, but the tourism sector is the most prominent. The sectors that have grown the most are: Hospitality AT and Airports: 65.0%; Industry: 0.1%; Water Collection and Treatment: 5.7%; Domestic and Other Services: 2.2%. Total, demand 7.3%.
The tourist activity of the Canary Islands, which boosts the economy and therefore electricity demand, continues to show a solid recovery, presenting positive values and very close to pre-pandemic values.
