Lanzarote exceeds 140,000 vehicles

The rate at which the island's car fleet is growing is much higher than the rate at which the population is increasing.

Used car sales fall by 8.2% in the Canary Islands in September

Lanzarote's vehicle fleet reached 140,065 units last June, according to data published by the Lanzarote Data Center with information from the Directorate General of Traffic, Ministry of the Interior and ISTAC.

The rate at which the number of vehicles on the island is growing is much higher than the rate at which the population is increasing. In the last 10 years, the vehicle fleet has grown by 27.8%, while the population has grown by 11.8%. In 2013 there were 109,576 vehicles for a population of around 139,500 inhabitants.

The sharp increase in the car fleet in the last decade on the island seems to have more to do with the growth of tourism, which in number of arrivals, has grown by 33.1% in the same period of time. If in the last year 2.8 million tourists arrived, ten years before there were 2.1 million people.

In the breakdown of vehicles provided by the Lanzarote Data Center, it can be seen that there are currently 31,249 trucks or vans on the island, a type of transport much less focused on the traveler than cars, which are also called passenger cars.

The fleet of vans and trucks has increased by 14.4% in the last ten years, while the number of cars has increased by 27.3%.

By municipalities, Arrecife currently has 49,257, followed by San Bartolomé where there are 23,525 vehicles in circulation.

Tías and Teguise have 22,459 and 20,524 cars respectively. Next is Yaiza with 13,091.

In the municipality of Tinajo there are 6,230 and in Haría there are 4,979.
