The Social Security affiliation data for the month of February showed the fourth highest figure in history in Lanzarote, closing the month with 64,518 affiliates.
It was in December 2019 when the Island registered 65,404 affiliates, the highest historical figure and the last one published before the start of the pandemic. The other two highest were September and June 2019, with 65,404 and 64,721 affiliates, respectively.
Until May 2020, these figures were published quarterly, so there is no data for January and February 2020, which were the last ones before the state of alarm was decreed in Spain. However, by March of that year, the island had already lost 5,586 affiliates compared to the peak in December 2019.
Lanzarote recovers the drop in affiliates from the month of January
The economic recovery on the Island has been gradually increasing throughout 2021 and the two months of this 2022. The figure for February this year has meant an increase of 1.9% compared to January, since in that month there were 63,317 affiliates on the Island, 1.9% less than in the previous month.
The first six months of 2021 maintained a similar number of affiliates, around 57,000, and it was from July when the number increased. In fact, Lanzarote closed 2021 with 64,092 affiliates, 6,638 more than it had at the beginning of that year.
In relation to the year-on-year increase, Lanzarote registered last month 12.6% more than in February 2021, when there were 57,323 on the entire Island.
The hotel industry, the economic activity with the most affiliations
Regarding the distinction of Social Security affiliates by economic activities, it was the hotel industry, with 18,399 affiliations, which led the ranking, according to the Lanzarote Data Center. After it is the wholesale and retail trade of motor vehicle and motorcycle repair, with 11,230, and in third place are administrative activities and auxiliary services, with 5,017.
Regarding the economic sectors, tourism concentrates 23,472 of the 64,518 Social Security affiliates in February Lanzarote, including hotel activities, with 10,108 affiliates, restaurants and similar focused on tourism, with 8,291, and the passenger transport service by road, with 1,298.
