The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Monday the signing of the protocol for adherence to the Framework Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, and Ecoembalajes España S. A. (Ecoembes) for the management of domestic packaging waste.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, explained that this adhesion allows the Cabildo to be integrated into a common collaboration system with the Government of the Canary Islands to manage the packaging waste generated on the island, such as cans, bottles, and other plastic containers. "This agreement establishes who pays the costs of the service and how the management is organized, in accordance with packaging regulations, preventing it from falling solely on local administrations," he pointed out.

Betancort indicated that the agreement provides **legal** and **economic** coverage for a service that is already provided, **guaranteeing that the costs of collection, transport, sorting, and treatment** of these waste materials will be financed by the **extended producer responsibility** systems, as stipulated by state regulations. Furthermore, it allows for work with **homogeneous criteria** throughout the Canary Islands. For his part, the Councilor for Waste, Domingo Cejas, explained that the agreement clearly sets out the **rules of the system, including the economic compensation that administrations receive** for the management of domestic packaging and the control and monitoring mechanisms. "Adherence facilitates more orderly management, with defined financing and clear recycling and separate collection objectives," he indicatedCejas added that the agreement also includes the **financing of information and awareness campaigns** aimed at citizens, with the goal of improving waste separation at the source and advancing compliance with the recycling percentages required by legislation

The agreement regulates the relationship between the public administrations of the Canary Islands and the collective extended producer responsibility systems, establishing the technical and economic criteria for the management of domestic packaging. It also establishes mechanisms for monitoring, control, and economic compensation for recovered materials, as well as the financing of information and awareness-raising actions aimed at citizens.
