The Lanzarote Business Confederation demands urgent solutions to housing access difficulties, which affect workers and families and limit companies' ability to hire and retain professionals.
In response to the announcement by CCOO and UGT of a general strike, scheduled for November 11, linked to housing, wages, and collective bargaining, the business organization calls for structural measures and agreements to address this problem on the island.
The Confederation shares the concern about the growing difficulties in finding housing at affordable prices. It warns that this situation affects the lives of those who work in Lanzarote and makes it difficult for companies to meet their staffing needs.
“Housing is one of Lanzarote’s major problems today. There are professionals willing to work on the island who ultimately cannot settle here because they cannot find housing or because the prices are unaffordable,” states the president of the Lanzarote Business Confederation, Beatriz Salazar.
The business organization calls for structural measures to increase housing supply. Among these, it proposes speeding up land availability and license processing, promoting public and protected housing, fostering public-private collaboration, and strengthening legal certainty.
Likewise, it argues that wage issues should be addressed within the framework of collective bargaining and taking into account the economic reality of each sector.
The Confederation believes that the responsibility for a structural problem like housing cannot be transferred to the business sector, as its solution requires coordinated action from public administrations and economic and social agents.
“Lanzarote needs solutions and agreements. Administrations, employers, and unions must sit down and work together so that living and working with dignity on the island are compatible,” concludes Beatriz Salazar.
