The Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has inaugurated the exhibition “20 years of illustrated claims”, a retrospective exhibition that collects the work of the illustrator, businessman and former member of the Corporation's Plenary, Miguel Cabrera, on the occasion of the institution's 20th Anniversary.
The event was attended by the president of the Chamber, José Valle, and the author himself. The event was notable for the significant attendance of members of the Plenary who have been part of the corporation in its different stages over these two decades.
During his speech, José Valle emphasized the value of this retrospective as a reflection of the entity's continuous commitment to local socioeconomic development. “Behind every stroke of Miguel, behind every touch of graphic humor, there is a serious claim, a just cause and a deep dedication to our land,” stressed the president, who thanked Cabrera for his sharpness and generosity in putting his talent at the service of the business voice.
Symbolism to summarize two decades of trajectory
For his part, Miguel Cabrera shared with the attendees the origin of this initiative, conceived to accompany the official demands of the corporation. The use of the cartoon was born as a visual impact resource designed to prevent files from falling into bureaucratic oblivion and to ensure that the needs of Lanzarote and La Graciosa did not go unnoticed by public administrations.
Likewise, the author detailed the meaning of the work he has created specifically for the institution's 20th Anniversary: “Although it is very difficult to capture the entire trajectory of these twenty years in a drawing, I have tried in a generic way to draw something easy to understand. It reflects the growth and consolidation over time; details such as the old nursery, represented by the same tree, the incorporation of La Graciosa with the hat hanging on the trunk, the incubator in full operation with the nest and its chicks, and the fruits it has been yielding. The basket in the foreground suggests the availability of those fruits for Lanzarote and La Graciosa,” explained Cabrera.

The beginnings of a shared strategy
At the close of the event, the author invited José Torres, former president of the Chamber of Commerce, who shared a legislative term with Miguel Cabrera and who was the main driving force behind incorporating these cartoons into the institution's advocacy strategy, to say a few words. Torres recalled those years with warmth and highlighted the initiative of having resorted to graphic irony to ensure that the Chamber's voice had a real impact and did not go unnoticed.
The exhibition, which reviews the main milestones and claims of trade and businesses in the islands through graphic satire, will remain on display in the courtyard of the Chamber of Commerce's Business Incubator and can be visited over the next few months.
