The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands has published the Final Resolution by which the subsidies aimed at the establishment of young farmers of the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy (PEPAC) are granted, endowed with 5.05 million euros and intended for 78 beneficiaries, nine of them residents in Lanzarote.
This amount, co-financed by the European Union through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, is distributed in two annual installments of 2,527,267.40 euros each, corresponding to the years 2026 and 2027.
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, highlighted that “this measure constitutes a fundamental tool to promote generational renewal and facilitate young professionals to start their own business projects in the agricultural sector”. In this regard, he stressed that the economic support received by the beneficiaries “is complemented by advice and technical support during the different phases of launching and consolidating the initiatives”.
Likewise, Quintero recalled that between 2023 and 2026 the Executive has managed subsidies for the creation of agricultural companies worth 19.9 million euros, under which 275 files from young people in the Canary Islands have been processed. “We are working so that no young person with a viable project has to give up joining the primary sector due to lack of financial support,” said the minister, who highlighted the increase in available credits and the improvement of the regulatory bases during the current legislature to achieve this purpose.
For the payment of the subsidy, beneficiaries must have started their activity before September 30, 2026. Likewise, they must submit the supporting documentation for the start of their installation and the actions contemplated in their business plans, as well as, where applicable, the documents related to organic production, the hiring of an additional agricultural work unit (UTA) and the investments executed.
In those cases in which, at the time of their installation, adequate training and professional competencies for the development of the subsidized activity are not available, they must be acquired before the completion of the business plan execution and, in any case, before September 30, 2027. For this purpose, they must demonstrate training of at least 200 instructional hours in subjects related to business management, the Agricultural, Livestock and Agricultural Production Holdings Information System (SIEX), environmentally compatible production methods, climate change, plant health, efficient water use, and occupational risk prevention, or animal welfare training when the holding has a livestock component.
