Balearia Canarias, the company resulting from the acquisition by Balearia of Armas Transmediterranea, brings news to Lanzarote.
Its fast ferry powered by liquefied natural gas, the Mercedes Pinto, which reaches 35 knots of speed, has docked in Arrecife. It is a vessel of 123 meters in length, with capacity for 1,200 passengers and 425 vehicles.
The objective of Balearia Canarias is to reinforce its commitment to sustainable mobility. The ship, built in the Armón shipyards in Gijón, has joined its twins Eleanor Roosevelt (2021) and Margarita Salas (2023).
Balearia's fast ferries have energy efficiency systems, intelligent sensors, and an optimized design to improve navigation and the onboard experience.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has celebrated the arrival of the latest generation fast ferry, whose docking in Lanzarote is the first in the Canary Islands.
“They have carried out docking tests at the new south dock, in Puerto Naos, equipped with a ramp for boarding and disembarking cars and trucks with merchandise. This fast ferry, to which others will be added in the short term, will be assigned to inter-island maritime routes,” explained de León on social media.
According to the mayor of the Conejera capital, “everything indicates that shipping companies in the Canary Islands will establish a direct line from Arrecife to the port of La Luz and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria very soon.”
“We have a strategic port, the closest to the peninsula and North Africa, and with many advantages to be a hub with other Canarian ports,” he added.
De León also shared that the tests and maneuvers carried out have revealed that “we are suitable for operating with fast ships that arrive at the capital of Gran Canaria in 3 and a half hours, half of what is currently needed by the ships that connect us with the capital of Gran Canaria.”
