The Federation of Associations of Consumers and Users in Action (Facua) advises caution to users and suggests not purchasing tickets with Volotea until its economic viability is resolved, following the airline's request for legal protection under the pre-insolvency proceedings to renegotiate its liabilities.
In statements reported by the specialized media outlet Preferente.com, the general secretary of the consumer organization, Rubén Sánchez, points out that "prudence should lead to not buying any tickets" and explains that he maintains this recommendation "until we know if the company is going bankrupt or is saved".
Sánchez admits to the aforementioned newspaper that the decision may generate criticism because it could contribute to further aggravating the company's situation, although he defends that it is a consequence of the lack of guarantees for consumers. Likewise, the Facua leader warns of the "uncertainty of what will happen with tickets already purchased" and denounces the absence of a legal mechanism or mandatory insurance to protect passengers in case the airline ceases its operations.
Therefore, the organization reproaches the governmental consumer authorities for not having attended to its repeated requests to demand mandatory coverage for insolvencies from airlines.
This warning to consumers comes at a critical moment for Volotea, which is processing a debt restructuring before the commercial court of Barcelona to avoid bankruptcy and ensure its continuity.
The airline's financial balance sheet shows a delicate scenario: after registering losses of 94.2 million euros in 2025 and negative net equity amounting to 570 million, the company faces the commitment to repay 200 million from the SEPI rescue and a 150 million credit guaranteed by the ICO.
To clean up its accounts, the management has proposed a severe adjustment plan that includes reducing its current fleet of 44 aircraft to a figure between 30 and 35, accompanied by staff adjustments at its Barcelona headquarters.
