The Government of the Canary Islands is moving forward with the changes introduced by the new decree on the accreditation of dependency care and dependency care services, which is moving towards new residential spaces that are small-format, more home-like, for the elderly.
In a statement, the regional Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families has detailed that this new regulation promotes "new parameters for the care of the elderly and those in situations of dependency, opting for a more friendly model of centers" that are conceived by these people "as a true home".
These are statements from the Vice-Minister of Social Welfare, Francis Candil, who visited the Nuestra Señora del Pino home residence this Tuesday, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, for its active aging program, which is funded with 60,000 euros from the autonomous community's resources.
"In the case of residential resources such as the Nuestra Señora del Pino residence for the elderly, a historic and reference center in the Archipelago, the decree includes transitional clauses that will allow them to adapt to this new model of homes or, when the structural conditions of the center do not allow it, they can change their care model to the one established in the future decree," explained Candil.
The Vice-Minister also stressed that these measures are added to the deinstitutionalization strategy launched by the regional department "in order to improve home care services and promote the autonomy of dependent people".
For her part, the director of the residence, Mother Paula, highlighted the "fully positive" work being carried out within the framework of the active aging program at the residence, which has a multidisciplinary team that includes a social worker, physiotherapist, and psychologist, and which serves approximately 225 elderly residents.
Active aging programs are one of the lines of action in the care of the elderly promoted by the Ministry, the statement highlighted, an initiative that is developed within the framework of the Maresía Plan, which includes a wide range of activities, programs, and projects aimed at promoting active longevity, healthy aging, and the autonomy of the elderly.
