Between January and November, 27% less cement was sold in Lanzarote than in the same period last year, according to data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
There have been just under 49,000 tons, while between January and November 2021 there were more than 67,000.
Cement sales, an important indicator of the dynamism of the construction sector on the island, have experienced sharp declines during all months of the year.
During the month of November, the last with available data, the fall was almost 19% compared to the same month of 2021. However, there have been months this year with much larger falls. In March a decrease of almost 46% was recorded. In May and June, the falls exceeded 36%.
During the pandemic period, the absence of tourists led to greater construction and renovation activity. It was during the first year of the pandemic when the records skyrocketed. The monthly growth rate was 72% in May 2020.
