CCOO and UGT call a general strike this autumn over the housing crisis and wages

The unions incorporate the rent conflict into the framework of the large housing mobilizations. Wages are not enough to pay for housing and cope with inflation.

The CCOO and UGT unions agree to call a 24-hour general strike this autumn to demand decent wages to access decent housing, an agreement that will have to be ratified by their highest governing bodies.

The organizations thus take the step they announced last Friday, when, after the rejection of the housing decree-laws by the Congress of Deputies, they announced that they would convene the governing bodies to decide how to incorporate the world of work into the mobilization, in unity of union action and in conjunction with social, neighborhood, and tenant movements.

The definitive date of the strike will be analyzed with social organizations and the tenant union, with the aim of mobilizing workers to support this 24-hour general strike, for the right to housing and decent wages to pay for it. The demonstrations last weekend have shown the strength of this demand, and the response must be built by all the organizations that support it.

The union proposals were framed within the proposal for the VI Agreement for Employment and Collective Bargaining (AENC), which included, with wage increases between 4% and 7%, wage revision clauses and clauses to facilitate access to housing, as well as in the Unitary Union Proposal promoted by both unions, which includes a ten-point plan for the right to housing, calling for a social and political pact, a public stock of protected and permanent housing, the limitation of rental prices, and the effective application of the Law for the Right to Housing in all territories.

The general strike calls upon the different public administrations that have competencies in housing matters and business organizations that must assume that wages must guarantee access to a basic good such as housing; the renewal of the AENC and the unblocking of collective agreements are areas to demonstrate this.

CCOO and UGT call on workers to join this campaign, in the workplaces and in the streets, and to support the general strike. We will continue with mobilization and collective bargaining until housing ceases to be a privilege, and wages allow people to live with dignity.
