The Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, through ACIISI, launches a call for nine million euros to support small, medium and large companies in the archipelago in the development of strategic technologies. The grants will accompany applied research projects in the experimental development phase, prior to their commercialization.
The objective is that the Canary Islands, in addition to incorporating solutions already available on the market, expand their capacity to generate their own technology. The call seeks to translate knowledge into new developments and results with higher added value, strengthening business activity linked to research and innovation in the islands.
The minister Migdalia Machín highlights that "for a company, moving from a technology that has proven its viability to a solution that can reach the market requires resources. This call allows us to support that effort and finance projects that can open new opportunities for economic activity in the Canary Islands".
Projects must fall within digital technologies, clean and efficient technologies, or biotechnologies. Support also includes their value chains, with projects that develop components and other essential solutions for the manufacturing of these technologies. Funding is limited to experimental development activities and does not include commercial production or the implementation of tools that are already marketed.
The selection of proposals will evaluate, among other aspects, scientific and technical quality, viability, and the capacity to transform research into high added value assets, such as patents.
Private companies with their own legal personality, registered and tax domicile, and a permanent establishment in the Canary Islands, with at least one employee and meeting the conditions of the call, may participate. Each project must have a subsidizable budget of between 500,000 and 1.5 million euros, including indirect costs.
The economic support may reach 60% of the eligible costs for small businesses, 50% for medium-sized ones, and 40% for large ones when the results are widely disseminated. This incentive adds 15 percentage points to the ordinary funding limits and promotes the sharing of generated knowledge through publications, conferences, open-access databases, or free or open-source software.
"We want the value of this investment to go beyond the company receiving support. That's why we give greater backing to projects that share their results: the dissemination of knowledge is also a way to strengthen the capabilities of our productive fabric," adds Machín.
The projects will have a duration of one to three years and must conclude, at the latest, on June 30, 2029.
The initiative is part of the Strategic Technologies for Europe (STEP) Platform, which directs this support towards the development and manufacturing of fundamental and emerging technologies. The allocation is distributed among the years 2026, 2027, and 2028 and has 100% funding through the ERDF Canarias 2021-2027 Programme.
The application submission period will be fifteen days, starting the day after the publication of the call extract in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC). Interested companies can submit their projects through the application enabled on the Ministry's electronic headquarters.
