Canary Islands promotes R&D applied to reducing the impact of type 2 diabetes and its complications

The call for grants for applied R&D projects promoted by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture (CUCIC), through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), will allow the University of La Laguna to develop the project ‘Determinants of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in an Admixed Population: Follow-up of the CDC Cohort in the Canary Islands’, with a budget of 285,155 euros.

The initiative addresses a critical public health problem in the Canary Islands, a region characterized by a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and significantly higher associated mortality than other autonomous communities.

The project focuses on analyzing the determinants of type 2 diabetes in a population with genetic diversity, based on the follow-up of the CDC cohort in the Canary Islands. The results will generate new evidence and tools aimed at improving the understanding of this disease and contributing to reducing its impact and complications.

The proposal aligns directly with the Health and Well-being priority of the expanded RIS3 of the Canary Islands, by addressing one of the archipelago's main health challenges. The project seeks to generate a positive socioeconomic impact by contributing scientific knowledge applicable to one of the chronic diseases with the greatest health and social repercussions.

The project is part of the 17 projects financed in the latest regional call for applied R&D, endowed with more than 2.5 million euros, and is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the ERDF Canary Islands Program 2021-2027.
