The Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín, has signed the regulatory bases of the new line of subsidies aimed at promoting Public Procurement of Innovation (CPI) in the Autonomous Community. The order, which will be published shortly in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, will have a budget of 2,714,205 euros.

“Public Procurement of Innovation is a strategic tool to transform our public services, improve the quality of life of citizens and generate new opportunities for the Canary Islands business fabric”, said the Minister. “With these aids we reinforce the commitment of the Canary Islands to an economy based on knowledge, talent and innovation”, she added.

This new line of aid aims to promote innovation projects developed by companies, whose solution is acquired by public entities. In this way, the development of innovative products or services is promoted, the efficiency of public administration is improved, business competitiveness is encouraged and entrepreneurship is promoted, especially among small and medium-sized companies.

Organizations and entities of the public sector that have the capacity to contract services or products may access these aids, provided that they comply with the established legal requirements, are based in the Canary Islands and are committed to gender equality through active and verifiable measures.

The subsidies will be awarded under a regime of competitive concurrence, with amounts ranging between 500,000 and 2,000,000 euros per project, and an execution duration of between 12 and 48 months. The processing will be carried out entirely electronically.

This initiative is part of the Smart Specialization Strategy of the Canary Islands (extended RIS3) and the ERDF Program 2021-2027, prioritizing sectors such as sustainable tourism, health, the blue economy, astrophysics or emerging industries. It also responds to the five strategic axes defined by the Government of the Canary Islands: knowledge, talent, internationalization, specialization and territorial development.

“Innovation must be at the service of the common good, and from the Government of the Canary Islands we are determined to facilitate the meeting between the public and private sectors to respond to the challenges of our society”, concluded Migdalia Machín.
