Canary innovation for precision agriculture: seeing what the eye does not see

The support of the CIDE Network, driven by ACIISI, allows transforming technological knowledge into new business opportunities

AgroDron Canarias has turned drone technology and robotic engineering into a tool to tackle some of the specific challenges of the primary sector in the Canary Islands. The company is part of the success stories of the CIDE Network, through Canarias Excelencia Tecnológica La Palma, and applies high-precision UAV technology to agriculture and land management, especially in areas of difficult access.

Among its services are aerial spraying and seeding, precision mapping, and multispectral diagnosis of crops, technologies that allow for early detection of situations such as water stress or possible pests and move towards more efficient management of agricultural holdings.

The CIDE Network is an initiative of the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, promoted through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, with a co-financing rate of 85% within the framework of the ERDF Canarias 2021-2027 Program.

 

Technology applied to the needs of the territory

One of the main differentiating elements of AgroDron Canarias is the adaptation of knowledge from robotic engineering and research in autonomous flight and industrial inspection to the specific needs of the Canary Islands territory.

This technological transfer has allowed the company to position itself as a pioneering operator in La Palma in the use of large-capacity agricultural drones, holding the necessary European aeronautical authorizations to carry out fumigation and aerial seeding work.

"Innovating does not require reinventing the wheel or creating something completely new from scratch. Much of the value lies in adapting technologies that already work in highly demanding sectors to solve real territorial problems more efficiently," explains Juan Simón Jaime, founder of AgroDron Canarias.

The company is already working on a new growth phase with the aim of automating part of the processing of information obtained through flights and improving the early detection of anomalies in crops through data analysis and artificial intelligence.

In the medium term, AgroDron Canarias also plans to extend its model of services to the entire archipelago and explore new markets on the Peninsula and internationally.
