Families in Canarias will allocate an average of 520 euros to gifts this Christmas, placing the archipelago as the community with the highest spending forecast among the regions analyzed for the year-end campaign.
The figure far exceeds the state average, set at 482.90 euros, and stands out in a context where Spain is the only market in its European environment —compared to France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom— that expects to increase its budget (+4.5%).
This is according to the report "Christmas 2026. Spanish Consumer Outlook and Retail Trends" by Sensormatic Solutions, the Johnson Controls brand for retail solutions.
In the distribution of spending in the archipelago, the textile sector accounts for the largest portion of the budget: fashion and accessories lead with 36%, followed at a distance by health and beauty (16%) and food and beverages (11%).
The spending in the islands contrasts with the projected behavior in other communities analyzed in the study, such as Catalonia, where the average spending will be 460 euros, or Castilla y León, where it amounts to 513 euros.
Generational Differences and Use of AI
At the state level, sociodemographic differences reflect a notable generational gap: 'Baby Boomers' lead the budget with an average of 549 euros compared to 395.50 euros for 'Generation Z'. By gender, men plan to spend 516.60 euros compared to 450.40 euros for women.
Despite the higher amount allocated to the holidays, consumers are resorting to stricter planning to cushion the expense: 54% of shoppers will advance their purchases to spread the spending across multiple paychecks, 64% will set a strict budget limit, and 51% will opt to buy fewer gifts, but more carefully chosen ones.
The shopping campaign also confirms the integration of digital solutions in the decision-making process. 31% of Spanish consumers will use artificial intelligence tools to prepare their Christmas shopping, placing the national market at the forefront of Europe in digital adoption, ahead of Italy (29%), the United Kingdom (24%), Germany (22%), and France (21%).
The use of AI is skyrocketing, especially among the youngest —53% in Generation Z and 40% among Millennials— and is mainly used in pre-purchase phases: 21% will use it through integrated search engines, 14% through conversational assistants to screen and compare products, and 11% to generate ideas and simplify the final gift choice.
