Boris Johnson announces a one-month lockdown for England

The United Kingdom has registered a total of 21,915 new cases of coronavirus in the last few hours

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this Saturday a one-month lockdown that will begin next Thursday and end in principle on December 2. The population will only be able to leave home for justified reasons: educational, health, work or to stock up.

Johnson appeared at a press conference in Downing Street and stressed that "there is no alternative" to this second confinement to stop coronavirus infections. "No responsible prime minister" could ignore the increase in infections in England, he stressed. He also warned that this winter there could be more deaths than in the first wave of the pandemic last spring if drastic measures are not taken.

In this confinement, schools, institutes and universities will continue to function, while sectors that cannot telework, such as construction or industry, will be able to continue their activity. Pubs, bars and restaurants must close, although they can offer take-away or home delivery products. Non-essential shops, hairdressers, leisure and entertainment centers will also remain closed.

The United Kingdom has registered a total of 21,915 new cases of coronavirus in the last few hours -- which bring the total number of those affected to over one million -- and another 326 deaths, according to the official balance released this Saturday. The Ministry of Health's balance sheet raises the total number of cases in the United Kingdom to 1,011,660 affected and the number of deaths to 46,555. A total of 10,918 people are hospitalized, of whom 978 require a ventilator.
