Therese, the new high-impact storm that will affect the Canary Islands starting next Wednesday, already chains 19 named systems in the 2025-26 season, an "absolute record" since these episodes began to be named.

This has been confirmed today by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in a thread published on its X network account, in which it points out that, "until now, the season with the most designations had been 2023-24", when 17 storms were counted.

The national agency has detailed that this new storm will hit the Canary archipelago with strong rains, storms, intense winds, and rough seas.

The forecasts from Aemet have also warned that the arrival of Therese will cause in the Canary archipelago showers that may be strong, with storm and hail, especially in the most mountainous islands, in addition to that it could generate very strong wind gusts, although stable weather will continue to characterize the weather on the peninsula.

This Monday, Samuel, the previous high-impact storm that shakes Spain and the eighteenth of the season, had broken the record regarding the number of namings of this type of phenomena in the same season since this program exists at the end of 2017.

Expansion of the list

The original list for naming storms and DANAs with great impact includes only two more names after Therese, and they are Vitor and Wilma.

Aemet has announced this afternoon that, in case the number of phenomena of this type were to exhaust the repertoire of denominations, the meteorological agencies of the countries of the southwestern Europe group will agree on an extra mini-list.

That list would include five more names, whose initials would go from A to E, with respective names for each letter of the alphabet.
