PSOE Canarias will open this week the primary calendar for the designation of its candidacy for the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands in the May 2027 elections, with the confirmation by the Secretary General, Ángel Víctor Torres, that he will run in the process.
The Regional Executive Commission met this Monday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to report on the calendar, which, with the endorsement of the federal leadership, will be specific to the Canary Islands. The process will be launched this Thursday the 17th, with the opening of the period for the presentation of pre-candidacies, which will last until Monday the 21st.
Only if more than one candidate runs, the process will continue with a phase of collecting endorsements, from the 22nd to the 29th, and an information campaign for the membership, from September 30th to October 9th, which would culminate in a vote on Saturday, October 10th. If a second round were necessary, the calendar would extend until October 17th.
After Monday's Executive meeting, Torres expressed his "willingness" to formalize his candidacy within the established deadline and stressed his firm objective of "winning the elections in the Canary Islands again," as he already did in the 2019 and 2023 regional elections. He is convinced that "things must and can be done differently" than the current Government of Coalición Canaria and Partido Popular is doing, and cited as an example the social and structural advances achieved by the Pacto de las Flores, "despite the many adversities we had to face," such as the pandemic or a volcanic eruption.
"Good work was done and the Canary Islands' citizens recognized it, making the Socialist Party the leading force in the Canary Islands," although it was "another legitimate parliamentary majority" that finally took over the regional government.
Torres highlighted that, since then, PSOE Canarias has worked from the opposition "with constructive proposals" and from the Government of Spain to promote beneficial measures for the islands. Among these, he cited the modification of article 35 of the Immigration Law, the proposal for regional financing, and the new royal decree-law that will allow the Canary Islands to have more than 600 million euros in surplus, in addition to incorporating specific measures for La Palma.
The Secretary General defended that PSOE Canarias is a party "with history, with experienced people, and with management capacity," which understands that "things in this land can be done differently," especially through better redistribution of wealth and policies aimed at reducing inequalities.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Torres assured that PSOE Canarias will also engage in "self-criticism" about its previous period in government and claimed the majority support received in the previous elections. "To the Canary Islanders, with this candidacy for the presidency, I can offer nothing more than what I have always offered them: work, tenacity, humility, and to be on the side of solving problems and not generating conflicts," he concluded.
