The Parliament of the Canary Islands premieres this Thursday, July 23, a new episode of its institutional videopodcast titled "Demographics and aging: the challenge of the Canary Islands of the future". It is a space for dialogue and reflection led by the President of the Chamber, Astrid Pérez, which aims to bring citizens closer to some of the main social, economic, and territorial challenges facing the archipelago.
This new edition addresses a key issue for the present and future of the Canary Islands: demographic evolution and its implications for quality of life, the sustainability of public services, access to housing, opportunities for youth, mobility, population aging, and social cohesion.
During the videopodcast, the President of the Parliament opened the debate with current demographic data, "one in five Canary Islanders is over 65 years old, a proportion that will continue to increase in the coming decades, with this scenario, important challenges arise in areas such as socio-health care, housing, or employment," assured the president.
To analyze this reality from complementary perspectives, the program brings together four guests with diverse profiles. Participants include Adal García Pueyo, CEO of Sinpromi and specialist in public management and social inclusion; David Gustavo Rodríguez, Doctor in Physical Education, professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and expert in active aging; Brunilda Pérez Batista, resident of Barlovento (La Palma), businesswoman for much of her life and witness to the social transformation experienced by the islands; and Iker Zalbidea Reguera, a graduate in Geography and Spatial Planning, linked to the field of youth participation and European policies.
Throughout five thematic blocks, the participants analyze the current demographic situation of the Canary Islands, the difficulties of access to housing for young people, the impact of migratory movements, the challenges arising from aging and dependency, as well as the decisions that must be made to build a more cohesive, sustainable Canary Islands prepared to face the changes of the coming decades.
With this initiative, the Parliament of the Canary Islands reinforces its commitment to opening new spaces for participation, dissemination, and analysis on the issues that most concern citizens, fostering plural dialogue and reflection from the institutional sphere.
