The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, regrets, on behalf of the House, the death of the former Canarian President Lorenzo Olarte Cullen and conveys "the deepest condolences of the Bureau and the entire Parliament of the Canary Islands" to his family and friends. "We are losing a key figure to understand politics in the Canary Islands from the late 70s of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century. A leader who, from the political center, vindicated the spirit of the Spanish democratic transition, which he was able to experience firsthand, as well as dialogue, consensus and the possibility of always reaching agreements," Astrid Pérez stressed.
Lorenzo Olarte presided over the Government of the Canary Islands between 1988 and 1991 and, subsequently, held the positions of vice president and Minister of Tourism of the Autonomous Community between 1995 and 1999. He was also a deputy in Congress and in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, where he held a seat during the first four legislatures. Between 1974 and 1979 he was president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.
Astrid Pérez makes the Parliament of the Canary Islands available to the family of the deceased to hold any tribute in his memory in the future.
"In just over two months, the Canary Islands has lost two great political figures, protagonists of our democratic history. The death of former President Jerónimo Saavedra, on November 21, and now the loss of Lorenzo Olarte leave an impossible void to fill in these islands. They are unrepeatable political figures who have all the respect of the Canarian people and will remain forever in our memory," concludes Astrid Pérez.
