The Canary Islands Consultative Council will expand its facilities with the incorporation of Casa Van Den Heede, a property of great historical value located on San Agustín street, in the historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This direct acquisition, for an amount of 1.6 million euros, responds to the growth experienced by the institution and the need to have adequate spaces that allow the development of its functions according to current standards of efficacy and efficiency.
The president of the Consultative Council, Carlos de Millán Hernández, highlighted this institutional collaboration, stating that "the predisposition of the president of the Parliament, Astrid Pérez, has been key for this new headquarters to exist; Parliament is much more agile when there is willingness," he assured.
For her part, the president of the Parliament positively valued the acquisition, underlining that it is "a historical heritage that passes from private hands to belong to everyone; now all the Canary Islanders will be able to enjoy it because it is part of the Parliament," indicated Astrid Pérez.
The new headquarters will allow for a lecture hall, library, archive, and offices for counselors and staff, thus facilitating attention to the new functions assumed by the institution and the increase in its staff. With this expansion, the Consultative Council reinforces its commitment to the continuous improvement of public service, guaranteeing adequate infrastructure for the exercise of its powers and adapted to the current demands of the citizenry.
The Van Den Heede House, built in the 18th century by the merchant Guillermo Van de Heede, originally from the Netherlands, constitutes a prominent example of traditional Canarian domestic architecture, with characteristic elements such as its cloistered patio, columns, and tea wood roofs. The property is part of the historic complex of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
The privileged location of the building, in the heart of the historic center, will favor the accessibility and urban integration of the Consultative Council, while contributing to the conservation and enhancement of the architectural heritage of the Canary Islands.
