The Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Emergencies, has declared as of 11:00 AM this Monday the Pre-alert situation for a possible episode of marine pollution in the municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

This decision is adopted based on the information available, and in application of the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA).

The CECOES 1-1-2 received on Monday morning the notice from the Port Authority informing of a spill of approximately 100 x 10 meters 1.8 miles east of the tip of the Reina Sofía pier. The port's PIM has been activated in Alert phase and the National Maritime Plan has been activated in Emergency Situation 1 phase.

Salvamento Marítimo has confirmed that the spill is already under control and that the Nunki rescue boat is in the mechanical dispersion phase at the site of the slick.

For all these reasons, this Directorate General of Emergencies proceeds to activate the PLATECA in Pre-alert Status to guarantee coordination between administrations and organizations, and to make available the necessary resources to ensure the correct monitoring of this situation.
