Izquierda Unida supports the demonstrations of April 20 in the Canary Islands

The political formation points out that "it does not appeal nor does it consider that there is tourismophobia, as the right wants to make believe"

Lanzarote joins the demonstration against tourism overcrowding

Izquierda Unida Canarias (IUC) has publicly shown its support for the mobilizations called for next April 20 in five Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, under the slogan "Canarias has a limit" and promoted by different environmental groups in the face of the "serious deterioration" of the Canary Islands, as a result of an "uncontrolled" tourism model.

Luisa Tamayo, national coordinator of Izquierda Unida Canarias, has expressed her deep concern about "the effects of a tourism model that consumes finite resources such as water and territory without control, which aggravates other unresolved problems in the Canary Islands such as waste management, which compromises access to housing or which causes a high and worrying impact on areas of high ecological value."

In addition, "it is found that the current tourism model, the main economic engine in the islands, not only does not significantly reduce unemployment rates but does not underpin quality working conditions, it being unacceptable that we are at the top in poverty rates and risk of extreme poverty," declares Tamayo.

However, "Izquierda Unida Canaria does not appeal nor does it consider that there is tourismophobia, as the right wants to make believe," emphasizes Tamayo, "it is only demanded that we have a sincere, courageous and determined debate to have a model that is as respectful as possible with the territory, the environment, natural resources and our cultural and ethnographic heritage while generating employment, and quality, and that does not negatively impact other basic rights such as access to housing" and, for this, "it is imperative a tourist moratorium while it is resolved which model is more eco-sustainable and what corrective measures are taken"

The formation already stated a few days ago that it was making its entire organizational structure available to increase the number of islands joining this initiative, by mobilizing its membership and supporters, creating synergies between political and social mobilization in defense of the Canary Islands territory.

For all these reasons, IUC has made a call to citizens, unions and associations to participate in the mobilizations of April 20 and to continue demanding that the Government of the Canary Islands take a position in favor of the Canary Islands social majority and for the Canary Islands, and not on the side of employers and business interests.
