Clavijo about the pact of PP and VOX: "Returning minors is illegal and indecent"

We speak of boys and of girls, of the rights of childhood, of international protection... Therefore, that that is put in a document worries me because we are weakening democracy,” has pointed out the president of the Canary Islands.

The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo (CC), defended this Thursday that the possibility of returning migrant minors to their countries of origin agreed upon by PP and Vox in the community of Aragón "is neither legal, nor decent.”

"We are talking about boys and girls, about the rights of children, about international protection... Therefore, that this is put in a document worries me because we are weakening democracy,” Clavijo pointed out, who has the PP as a government partner.

In statements made in Lanzarote, the Canarian president recalled that, due to the express return of Moroccan minors who had crossed the Ceuta fence, the former government delegate in that city is charged in a criminal process.

"In the Canary Islands, all political forces, except Vox, agree on giving that human and decent treatment to the phenomenon of migration," Clavijo added, who remarked that Pope Leo XIV is going to visit the islands in June, "among other things, to set as an example the response" that has been given in this community.

Fernando Clavijo understands that "the Canarian people have known how to rise to the occasion and have offered a civilized response to a phenomenon that has always existed and will continue to exist."

"If we continue to insist on not being responsible for what happens in Africa, we will again have in the near future the need to emigrate to seek a better future," he added.

Regarding the extraordinary regularization of immigrants, the president of the Canary Islands misses "the leadership that the State should have exercised to coordinate the autonomous communities" and does not rule out helping the city councils with personnel from the Canarian Government "because services may be overwhelmed."

However, he has requested more information on the final text of the regularization.

"We have not been able to have a single meeting with the 88 municipalities of the Canary Islands to see how this process was going to be carried out because the Sectoral Conference on Migration has not been convened for more than a year and we had no idea of the text that was approved in the Council of Ministers," he explained.

In his opinion, knowing that text "would have allowed some extraordinary resources to be articulated with the State to reinforce the services of the city councils in such a way that they could attend to the people."

Clavijo believes that "the regulation was necessary," but also that it has become necessary "because migration policy has failed and border control has failed."

For this reason, he has asked for coordination to avoid "the mess that there is right now and that is generating a space for the far-right that has a xenophobic, fascist, and anti-human rights discourse."
