The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has defended this Monday that the sentence that imposes twenty-four years in prison on former minister José Luis Ábalos must have political consequences and has reminded Pedro Sánchez that he has in his hands the option to call elections or submit to a vote of confidence.
In statements made in Buenos Aires, during his official visit to Argentina, the general secretary of Coalición Canaria - one of Sánchez's investiture partners - has expressed his respect for the ruling made public this Monday by the Supreme Court.
"My utmost respect for the sentences. We can only comment on the political aspects. And, well, after this sentence, I understand that there must be repercussions from a political point of view. That is what we can ask for, that the appropriate political responsibilities be assumed," Clavijo stated.
The Canarian president has also commented on the parliamentary situation in which Sánchez's Government finds itself, to reaffirm the official position that his party has maintained for weeks: call elections or a vote of confidence.
"It is the president of the Government who has the possibility to do both things," he added.
