The European Central Bank (ECB) has made it clear this Wednesday that the Canary Islands and other European islands and overseas territories will continue to be on the new euro banknotes, as they will be included in the final designs of the sketches presented last week.
The ECB presented the pre-selected designs for the new euro banknotes last Thursday, July 23, at its headquarters in Frankfurt (Germany) and launched a survey for Europeans to give their opinion until September 21.
These proposals are inspired by two themes: "European culture" and "rivers and birds," as well as the motifs chosen to illustrate them.
In those sketches, the Canary Islands, other European islands, and overseas territories disappeared, but the ECB explains to EFE that the guidelines regarding the map of Europe provided to the designers were general in nature and did not specify how overseas territories or European islands should be represented.
However, they clarify, these islands and territories will be incorporated during the next phase of the redesign, once the final proposal has been selected and adapted for conversion into actual banknotes.
Therefore, the Canary Islands will continue to be represented on the new euro banknotes.
