The "yes" of the Government of the Canary Islands to the new model of regional financing will be formalized this Wednesday in the Council of Fiscal and Financial Policy (CPFF) by the Minister of the Presidency, Nieves Lady Barreto, from Coalición Canaria, replacing the head of Finance, Matilde Asián, from the PP.

Barreto, general secretary of CC in La Palma, replaces Asián because the latter has requested three days off, from this Tuesday until Thursday the 30th, sources from the Canary Executive have confirmed to EFE.

The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, stressed this Monday in the presence of the ministers of Finance and Territorial Policy, Arcadi España and Ángel Víctor Torres, that the decision to support the new financing model, seeing the singularities of the islands recognized, is shared by his entire Government, made up of Coalición Canaria, Partido Popular, and Agrupación Herreña Independiente.

The Minister of Finance of the Canary Islands has maintained a critical stance on the new model of regional financing, very similar to that of the other ministers from the communities governed by the PP.

President Clavijo had shared his objections for not seeing guaranteed - until this Monday - the minimum demands that the Canary Islands were making in the negotiation and which had the express endorsement of the majority unions and employers' associations in the archipelago.

However, he has always insisted that he would not walk away from a negotiation table and that he would exhaust any option to reach an agreement that equaled the Canary Islands in financing with the average of the rest of Spain and guaranteed that its Economic and Fiscal Regime would be excluded from the calculation of resource distribution.

In fact, in February 2025, when all the PP ministers left the CPFF meeting where the regional debt write-off was being discussed, the Canary Islands president publicly stated that he did not agree with his Minister of Finance joining that walkout, something he described as a "personal decision."
