The Government of the Canary Islands believes it is necessary to modify the state Coastal Law to update it and unify criteria on the powers granted to the autonomous communities over their coastlines, indicated the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez.
In his opinion, the transfer of powers over coastlines to the Canary Islands is "incomplete and insufficient," both in terms of human, technical, legal, or economic resources.
The powers over the coastline are included in the Canary Islands' Statute of Autonomy, Rodríguez recalled, highlighting the lack of common criteria and the inequality in the transfers from one autonomous community to another.
Galicia, for example, does not include powers over coastlines in its Statute of Autonomy, but it drafted a law that the Constitutional Court upheld and enjoys a broad transfer, said the minister during a press conference in which he presented the I Congress of Coasts of the Canary Islands, which will be held in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria).
The governance of the autonomous communities over the coastline, its development, and the environment are some of the issues that will be addressed at this event on October 15 and 16.
The Congress arises from the project "77 coastal municipalities, one territory," promoted by the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Canary Federation of Municipalities (FECAM).
Its objective is to promote work between the municipalities and the Government of the Canary Islands and to contribute to streamlining procedures and processes for the management of the maritime-terrestrial public domain.
Likewise, the draft of the Canary Islands Coastal Law will be presented, and dialogue will be fostered among the autonomous communities that have coastlines, said the minister.
