The Canary Islands have resumed in-person classes after the Christmas holidays with 883 teachers testing positive for coronavirus, representing 2.8% of the archipelago's total staff, which consists of 31,265 teachers.

According to data from the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Education collected by Europa Press, and referring to the first day of this Monday, positive coronavirus cases also affect a total of 2,717 students, representing 0.8% of the islands' student body, which totals 337,810 students.

Faced with this situation, the ANPE teachers' union has requested this Tuesday to improve the tracking of infections, prioritize the vaccination of the third dose for teachers, increase the number of Covid teaching staff to be able to attend to students, have a telephone service available to manage teacher absences, carry out the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 only in healthcare facilities authorized for this purpose, and guarantee electronic devices in case of confinement, among other measures.
