The Wolves Squad martial arts sports club from Playa Blanca continues its unstoppable progress in training and competition: boys and girls from the south won 35 medals at the 2025 Canary Islands Grappling and Grappling Gi Championship held last November in Gran Canaria, an outstanding performance that placed the southern group on the third step of the podium among 44 participants from all the islands.
The Wolves Squad had 33 young athletes at the Juan Beltrán Sierra Pavilion in Las Palmas, achieving a more than productive medal tally, mostly gold. Half a thousand athletes from the Canary Islands participated in this regional competition focused on grappling and gi grappling.
Grappling is a form of wrestling that focuses on grips, submissions, and controlling the opponent, while gi grappling is the modality practiced using the kimono (gi), which provides additional grips to try to control the rival
The Yaiza Sports councilor, Ángel Lago, visited the club's headquarters to present a gift on behalf of the City Council, with the attendance of athletes from different categories and the club's directors, Sara Cotaina and Jorge Iván Rodríguez. "We are proud of the results, but above all of the discipline and enthusiasm with which our young people practice and compete in sports. More and more boys and girls want to learn and play sports, and this trend gives greater meaning to the collective work of the Municipal Sports Schools," points out councilor Ángel Lago.
